Once upon a time, before Standard Showdown took center stage, Brawl Fridays were a beloved tradition at Curiosity Video Games and More. Our store championships even used the Brawl format—until Wizards of the Coast changed the rules, disallowing its use for official store championships. As a result, we shifted to Standard.
But now, as voted on by our amazing community, Standard Brawl is making its comeback for Commander Nights this December! Get ready to embrace this exciting format once again.
What is Standard Brawl?
Standard Brawl is a thrilling Magic: The Gathering format where creativity and strategy shine. Here’s what you need to know:
1 Commander Card
Choose any legendary creature or planeswalker from a set currently in Standard.
59 Supporting Cards
Build a deck with cards that share your commander’s color identity and are Standard-legal.
Singleton Format
Only one copy of each card is allowed, except for basic lands.
No Sideboards
Your deck is your only tool for victory—no sideboards allowed.
Special Exceptions
While the format uses only Standard-legal cards, Arcane Signet and Command Tower are always legal in Standard Brawl, even if they aren’t part of the current Standard sets.
Standard Legal Sets (2024)
Your deck can include cards from the following sets:
Dominaria United
The Brothers' War
Phyrexia: All Will Be One
March of the Machine
March of the Machine: The Aftermath
Wilds of Eldraine
The Lost Caverns of Ixalan
Murders at Karlov Manor
Outlaws of Thunder Junction
Bloomburrow
Duskmourn: House of Horror
Magic: The Gathering Foundations
Pro Tip: Cards reprinted in these sets are also legal, even if you use an older version. However, keep in mind that supplemental sets like Commander decks tied to these releases are not Standard-legal.
Banned Cards
Currently, only one card is banned:
Sorcerous Spyglass
Please ensure your deck does not include this card.
